Hello friends, family, and supporters of South West Philharmonia and Chorus,
As summer unfolds across the South West, the SWPC community is in full swing preparing for a season packed with music, connection, and celebration. From Fringe festivals to Proms finales, exciting partnerships, and even a bit of pop magic — we’re proud to be making waves both on stage and off.
Here’s a look at what’s been happening — and what’s coming up!
🎭 Gearing Up for Tavistock Fringe Festival
We’re delighted to be performing at the Tavistock Fringe Festival, an event that celebrates artistic expression in all its forms, right in the heart of Devon. It’s always a privilege to take part in festivals that bring people together through creativity, and our ensemble is rising to the occasion with a stunningly diverse programme.
The choir has recently begun rehearsals on the gorgeous Dirait-on by Morten Lauridsen — a lush, intimate choral piece that challenges us to blend tone, language and expression with precision and beauty. Meanwhile, the orchestra is having tremendous fun bringing a brand-new Glenn Miller medley to life. Expect swing, sparkle, and a few goosebumps along the way!
This Fringe performance will be a powerful showcase of SWPC’s versatility and our commitment to bringing high-quality, inclusive music-making to communities across the region.

🎤 Marcus to Perform with Rock Choir for Olly Murs!
In a slightly different musical twist, I’m thrilled to be performing this weekend as part of the Rock Choir vocal group, supporting none other than Olly Murs at one of his major summer shows!
While the SWPC orchestra won’t be joining me for this one, it’s a fantastic opportunity to bring some community-powered harmony to a large-scale pop audience — and to represent the South West’s incredible choral scene on a national stage. The energy in rehearsals has been electric, and I can’t wait to step out with Rock Choir and add our voices to what’s sure to be an unforgettable night of music.
If you’re in the crowd — come find me and say hi!
🎆 Looking Ahead: The Last Night of the Proms
Of course, no SWPC summer would be complete without our beloved Last Night of the Proms celebration. This iconic event is always a moving and joyful moment, combining grandeur, community pride, and a bit of good old-fashioned musical flag-waving.
Our musicians are already in full swing preparing a bold, inclusive programme that nods to tradition while embracing the spirit of the modern South West. With a balance of orchestral brilliance and choral firepower, this is one not to miss.

🎶 Rehearsals in Full Swing
Behind the scenes, our rehearsal rooms are buzzing. The choir continues to grow in confidence and expression, leaning into technically demanding works like Dirait-on with passion and poise. Meanwhile, the orchestra’s Glenn Miller medley has been a true crowd-pleaser — full of bounce, brass, and brilliance.
There’s a real sense of momentum right now. Our musicians are not just learning notes — they’re deepening their artistry and building something extraordinary together.
