Tavistock Fringe Performance: A Glimpse into the Magic of Last Night of the Proms 2025

This year, South West Philharmonia & Chorus (SWPC) had the incredible opportunity to take part in the Tavistock Fringe, delivering a performance full of energy, community spirit, and a touch of the Proms magic. With vibrant music and a mix of orchestral and choral works, it was a perfect opportunity for our talented musicians to showcase their skills in an intimate and welcoming setting.

The performance was a warm-up of sorts for our highly anticipated Last Night of the Proms 2025. If the energy and joy from Tavistock are anything to go by, the Last Night of the Proms will be an unforgettable experience. We’re already preparing a programme brimming with much-loved classics, with pieces such as Elgar’s Land of Hope and Glory, Parry’s Jerusalem, and the exhilarating Sea Songs making their way into the spotlight. It's a celebration of British music at its finest, set to transport you to the heart of the Proms atmosphere – full of pomp, excitement, and emotion.

We can’t wait to welcome you to Last Night of the Proms 2025, where you’ll be treated to an electrifying performance filled with audience favourites and stirring anthems. The 2025 programme will include:

  • Jerusalem by Hubert Parry

  • Land of Hope and Glory by Edward Elgar

  • Sea Songs (featuring Home Sweet Home, Hornpipe, Rule Britannia)

  • A special How Great Thou Art performance

  • Plus much more to stir your soul and lift your spirits!

The History of the Proms: A Celebration Beyond Patriotism

The Proms, originally founded in 1895 by Sir Henry Wood, have long been regarded as a celebration of British musical culture. While the Last Night of the Proms is often associated with patriotism and national pride, it is much more than that. The Proms festival has always been a celebration of the rich and diverse tapestry of British musical traditions—from classical compositions to modern British voices. It’s a gathering that revives the original ethos of the Proms, welcoming audiences of all backgrounds to experience the very best in orchestral and choral music, from our beloved traditions to cutting-edge contemporary works. Through this celebration, the Proms continue to honour Sir Henry Wood’s original vision of creating a more accessible and inclusive musical experience, blending tradition and innovation in a way that resonates with audiences of today.
